Pet Ear Infections

Many infections that pets suffer from are located in the ears. The experienced dermatologists at Animal Dermatology Center of Chicago will diagnose and treat these infections. Here’s some information about some of the infections that pets might contract.

Otitis

Download our handout on Otitis.

Otitis means inflammation or infection of the ear. When this occurs in the ear canal or the visible part of the ear, it is called otitis externa, and when present in deeper parts of the ear or if the eardrum is ruptured, it is referred to as otitis media. We can only determine which type is present by using an instrument called an otoscope to look down the ear canal.

We will try to determine the cause of the infection as well as the extent of any damage that has been done to the ear. The ear will be cleaned thoroughly and the inflammation controlled. Any secondary infections will also need to be treated. If we cannot eliminate the actual cause of the infection, we will work with you to develop a maintenance program so that you can keep your pet’s ears in the best possible condition.

“My other Westie, Spocker, exhibited his allergies when he was about a year old. I found him in the bedroom with blood dripping down his ear. He had an ear infection that was resistant to normal drugs. He could not stop scratching. It was terrible. I brought him to Dr. Friberg and got him on a program that has helped him tremendously. He is now going on nine and is a happy, healthy and beautiful companion.” -- Norma Koff
